KP local body elections: PTI 15, Opposition won 26 seats, unconfirmed results

According to unofficial preliminary results of the first local body elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) after the amalgamation of the tribal districts, the opposition parties have a joint lead over the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

Out of the 66 tehsils of 17 districts of the province, PTI won 15 seats in the unconfirmed results. After which Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) 13, Awami National Party (ANP) 9, Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) 2, while Jamaat-e-Islami and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) managed to win one seat each. Apart from political parties, independent candidates also secured 13 seats.

According to preliminary results, JUI-F seems to be winning the mayoral seat in Kohat and Peshawar while ANP is seen winning the city mayor’s seat in Mardan. Elections were announced in 66 tehsils of 17 districts, but were postponed in Bannu, Dara Adamkhel and one provincial tehsil each.

After a gap of six years, the first round of local government elections on Sunday saw a spate of violence and attacks, killing five people and destroying some polling stations.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had set up 9,223 polling stations for 12.668 million registered voters in 17 districts. The abduction, the clash in Karak and the mob attack on the vehicle of Federal Minister Shibli Faraz in Kohat. However, due to the ECP’s decision to hold local elections in two phases, overall arrangements were better than in the 2015 elections.

According to the ECP, a total of 2,032 candidates have already been elected unopposed to the village and Neighbourhood Council seats in 17 districts of the province, including 217 General Councillors, 876 women, 285 farmers, 500 youth and 154 minority seats.

In 17 districts of KP namely Buner, Bajaur, Swabi, Peshawar, Nowshera, Kohat, Karak, Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu, Tank, Haripur, Khyber, Mohmand, Mardan, Charsadda, Hangu and Lakki Marwat. There are 12,668,000 voters, including 7 million men and 5.5 million women.

It is to be noted that the local government elections have been held for the first time ever in the tribal districts of Khyber, Mohmand and Bajaur.
