Sheikh Rasheed spells out the reason for suspension of social media services

Lahore, 16th April: Sheikh Rasheed apologized to the public for the shut down of social media services across the country.

According to Baaghi TV’s report, Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed apologized on Friday after the government shut down all social media platforms saying it was done for the safety of the citizens.

In a video message shared today, Rasheed clarified that WhatsApp, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and Twitter were suspended as the government feared that workers of the banned organization Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan had called for protests after Friday prayers.

The Interior Minister added that the government has fought against those who intend to spread violence in the country, and would further ensure that people were not caused any distress.

Sheikh Rasheed informed that the federal government is taking steps to block passports, identity cards, bank accounts and social media accounts of those who are spreading hatred and terrorism in Pakistan.

It is pertinent to mention here that according to Baaghi TV’s earlier reports, Pakistan’s interior ministry has instructed Pakistan Telecommunication Authority to suspend Facebook, Whatsapp, Youtube and Twitter today with immediate effect from 11 am till 3 pm on Friday.
