Star studded “Vax Live” concert in Los Angeles made fighting vaccine disinformation its theme
Los Angeles, May 3 2021: The “Vax Live: The concert to reunite the world” happened in Los Angeles on Sunday evening and turned out to be a star studded event with celebrities such as British Prince Harry, Sean Penn, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez in attendance.
The organizers of the concert are called Global Citizen, an advocacy group that seeks to fight pandemic disinformation and also to call on world leaders and corporations to take action.
The purpose of the concert was to urge faster and more equal global vaccination roll out. Prince Harry, for whom it was the first public appearance since moving to the US with his wife last year, voiced support for the cause and also expressed solidarity for the citizens of India who is battling a deadly second wave of the virus.He also expressed concern over the vaccine disinformation campaign that was damaging the cause of equal vaccinations for all and called it a humanitarian crisis.
The concert featured video messages from the pope and also President Joe Biden. The concert will get a television and YouTube airing on May 8 while it was actually attended by thousand of fully vaccinated spectators in a vast stadium in California on Sunday. The concert will also be broadcast internationally on Brazil’s Globo, Colombia’s Caracol, SABC in South Africa and MultiChoice in Africa.
The recorded message by President Biden said he was “working with leaders around the world to share more vaccines and boost production” while Pope Francis said: “I beg you not to forget the most vulnerable.”
The night began with thousands of spectators, most of whom are medical frontline workers dressed in their uniforms gathered in the giant newly completed SoFi stadium in Los Angeles. The stage featured an elaborate meadow theme. The host of the concert, Selena Gomez called for donations in a campaign called “doses and dollars” just as parts of the developed world emerge from long lock downs thanks to successful and timely vaccination roll outs.
Jennifer Lopez addressed fans saying how she had to spend Christmas without her mother for the first time last year and later called the matriarch on stage for a feelgood singalong of “Sweet Caroline”
The Foo Fighters were joined by surprise guest Brian Johnson of AC/DC for a rendition of “Back in Black.” “We ain’t out of the woods yet… let’s work as hard as we can to make sure we can do this” every night, said frontman Dave Grohl.
Some other contributors of the video messages include Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan, French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
