Tajikistan has denied former Afghan President Ashraf Ghani’s plane landing on their soil yesterday amid the ongoing tense situation in Afghanistan. The Tajik airforce has confirmed that his aircraft did not enter its airspace.
According to reports, the former President’s current whereabouts are unknown. Media reports state that Ashraf Ghani is trying to seek asylum in another country, possibly a western country, maybe the US. He fled Afghanistan after Kabul came under Taliban control.
Earlier, sources at the Russian Embassy in Kabul said Ashraf Ghani was carrying bags of money while fleeing but could not take all of it. Four vehicles of money had been brought with him when he reached the airport, but the money he could not carry was abandoned on the runway.
Last night, Ashraf Ghani said in a message on Facebook that the Afghan Taliban had threatened to attack Kabul and civilians to get him to resign, and so he decided to leave the country himself to avoid bloodshed. The Taliban have won with the force of a sword and a gun, and now they are responsible for the honor of their countrymen, and the safety of their property, he said.
The Afghan Taliban, on the other hand, have rejected Ashraf Ghani’s allegations and said they entered the city peacefully.
It is to be noted that the Taliban reached the outskirts of Kabul yesterday, and a new interim government has been formed, headed by Ali Ahmed Jalali.
