The Caligula

He was a Roman emperor, son of Germanicus. A Roman general who was known for his warfare abilities. But Caligula’s life was full of tragedies. To gain prominence he thought he would go to war with Britain. The journey was perilous. He could not cross the British channel.
He planned to chain a few of his own soldiers. Took them home. He made them parade through the streets of Rome to show that he caught prisoners of the enemy. They were bedraggled and disheveled. People believed as if that really was the case. But because he was a quintessential ruler, crazily insane, he was over the top. Then those very senators conniving with Claudius, had him killed. Claudius was his real uncle and his confidant. History is ruthlessly vindictive. Nothing lasts forever. There’s this darkest night before dawn.

He was broke. Claudius, his uncle advised him to bring the senators to book, and to go on with his debauch life he wanted more money. He reintroduced treason trials which he had done away with when he came to accession in the first instance. He burnt the original scrolls in front of his senators letting them believe he was a kind emperor. And he was willing to forget and forgive. But he had them copied, and now came up with those to their utter horror. He had them killed but to no avail. He needed more money. He was becoming quite unpopular amongst the Roman people.
Caligula had tens of thousands killed. Undeterred he tried to eradicate all his enemies which he did eventually. Yet he lost his life to the petrified senators who thought he was becoming too dangerous to the roman republic. They finally got rid of him. This was 41 CE.

We as citizens continue to pay through our noses. Our worthy leaders continue on with their depraved lifestyles. They are the Caligulas of present times. He was the one who reinstituted treason trials to collect money from the wealthy and his senators. They never saw the light again.
He was a hedonist burning the public candle at both ends.
Our elders belonged to a fading era when the pride and passion for performing for your country superseded the desire for pelf and plunder.
