The countries managing corona crisis better have something in common

Female leaders in places like New Zealand, Taiwan and Iceland have been applauded for their effective strategies in quickly combatting the coronavirus pandemic.

However, experts argue that any leader can be successful if they are able to demonstrate a balance of strength and compassion, qualities that are easier said than done due to societal expectations placed on both genders.

Noteworthy, Germany has now overseen the largest-scale coronavirus testing program in Europe thanks to their longstanding chancellor Angela Merkel, conducting 350,000 tests each week and detecting the virus early enough to isolate and treat patients effectively.

Small nordic countries like Iceland, Finland and Norway took early action as well, employing smart methods of combating the virus early on.

Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir has been offering free coronavirus testing to all of Iceland’s citizens, while most countries have limited testing to people with active symptoms. As a result, the tiny country with less than 400,000 residents has already screened five times as many people as South Korea has, without having to shut schools or institute widespread lockdowns.

Likewise, Taiwan, a self-governing island of nearly 24 million people that Beijing claims as its territory, has just 395 coronavirus cases and six deaths. Led by President Tsai Ing-wen, Taiwan acted quickly to institute specific approaches for case identification, containment, and resource allocation.

In a nutshell, there have been years of research timidly suggesting that women’s leadership styles might be different and beneficial.

It’s time we recognized it – and elected more of it.
