The sudden change of name after years raises the question: Chief Justice LHC

Wednesday, June 24th: According to the report of Baaghi TV, the matter of changing the name of Benazir Income Support Program was heard in the Lahore High Court at the request of PPP.

PPP leader Qamar-ul-Zaman Kaira appeared in the court of Chief Justice Lahore High Court. Lawyer Qamar-ul-Zaman Kaira said in the court that the present government has changed the name of Benazir Income Support Program to Ehsaas Program, Secretary Benazir Income Support Program, appeared in court.

The Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court said that the federation is very fast. What does the law say on this issue whether the name can be changed or not?

The Chief Justice inquired about the number of programs under the Benazir Income Support Act. Secretary Benazir Bhutto said that there are many programs that are running. The Chief Justice asked who is the chairperson of Benazir Income Support. Secretary Benazir Income Support Program said that Dr. Sania Nishtar is the chairperson who has three other programs.

The Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court inquired as to how these institutions were formed and named after them. To which the court replied that the matter has been discussed in the cabinet and decisions have been taken.

The Chief Justice inquired whether Qamar-ul-Zaman Kaira Sahib had anything to say. To which Qamar-ul-Zaman Kaira said that Benazir Income Support was made for the poor. Income support is offered as an example all over the world. There is a tradition in our country that we want to uproot each other’s boards. This is the largest cash program in Pakistan.

The Chief Justice inquired how many programs were running when he was the chairman of Benazir Income Support Program, to which Qamar Zaman Kaira told the court that the same program was running under the name of Benazir Income Support.

The Chief Justice inquired whether financial assistance was given to the people in the name of Benazir Income Support before the last election. When was this name changed? Secretary Benazir Program said that in February 2020, money is being provided under Benazir Income Support in the name of sponsorship and sense of emergency. The Chief Justice questioned the federal counsel as to whether the federal government had not violated the law.

Qamar Zaman Kaira’s lawyer told the court that the cabinet did not approve the change in the act. The government actually wants to remove the name of Benazir Bhutto. A tragic incident took place with Benazir Bhutto and she was martyred. It is against the law for the government to change the name without amending the Act.

The Chief Justice of Lahore High Court (LHC) said that if necessary, the data of the Parliament should be called for whether anyone opposed the naming of Benazir Income Support. Chief Justice Lahore High Court said that we do not want to stop aid to the poor by issuing immediate order and issuing restraining order. Lahore High Court sought a detailed reply from the federal government.
