Théoneste Bagosora dies while serving jail time: Mali
Théoneste Bagosora, the Rwandan “kingpin” and a former armed force colonel was convicted for his part in the Rwandan Genocide has passed on in Mali, where he was in jail. Théoneste Bagosora, 80, was a senior figure in Rwanda’s service of protection at the hour of the killings. He was responsible for the killings of 800,000 individuals in the 1994 massacre. A UN-sponsored criminal council condemned him to life in jail, however this was subsequently decreased to 35 years. Achille, his son told the international media that he kicked the bucket at a clinic in Bamako, where he was being treated for heart issues, out of aggression. The genocide of the 800,000 Rwandans started after a plane conveying Rwanda’s then-President Juvenal Habyarimana was shot down on 6 April 1994, killing all the passengers on board. Théoneste Bagosora was captured after two years, in Cameroon, where he had escaped to after Paul Kagame’s Rwandan Patriotic Front held onto power.
