Tokyo Olympics: Philippines wins first gold medal after 100 years
Hydylene Diaz, a weightlifter, made history by becoming the first Filipino woman to win a gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the world’s largest athletic event.
According to accounts in foreign media, the Philippines has struggled to reach the top of the podium for the past 100 years. The Philippines sent their first delegation to the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris.
Diaz earned a gold medal in the 55th category of women’s weightlifting, setting an Olympic record by successfully lifting a total weight of 224 kg in two lifts.
Hydrangea Diaz competed in the Gold Medal Contest against Live Kevin of China, the current world record holder.
Before walking to the platform, Diaz, who served in the Philippine Air Force, celebrated his historic triumph with his trainers.
