TTP ends ceasefire with future of peace talks uncertain

Dec 10, 2021: The (TTP) armed group, also known as the Pakistani Taliban, has unilaterally announced a one-month ceasefire with the Pakistani government, and peace with the authorities, a statement said.

They accused Pakistan’s government of reneging on promises made in the early stages of the talks. The ceasefire came into effect on November 9, when the Pakistani government announced the start of talks with the armed group, which has been fighting the Pakistani government since 2007 and has targeted dozens of civilians and security forces across the country in a conflict that saw thousands killed.

Late on Thursday, the TTP announced “it is not possible for the ceasefire to continue” under current conditions, in a statement released to journalists.

The militant group said in a statement said the government had not released more than 100 prisoners as promised and had not appointed negotiating teams to conduct talks. It also said security forces had carried out raids while the ceasefire was in force.

On November 9, Chaudhry confirmed that the month-long ceasefire had been agreed upon between the government and the TTP.

“The state’s sovereignty, national security, peace in relevant areas and social and economic stability will be considered during the talks,” he was quoted as saying.

On November 14, acting Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Mottaki confirmed that the Afghan Taliban were acting as mediators in the talks between the TTP and the Pakistan government.

The TTP also accused Pakistani security forces of violating the ceasefire by conducting raids and arrests against TTP fighters in the areas of Lakki Marwat, Swat, Bajaur, Dir and Swabi.

Fawad Chaudhry said that talks with the TTP were taking place within the ambit of the Constitution and that Afghan authorities facilitated the discussions.

“No government can negotiate outside Pakistan’s constitution and laws,” said Fawad, while giving a media briefing on Pakistan’s ongoing talks with the TTP.

“The talks will focus on state sovereignty, national security, peace, social and economic stability in the areas concerned,” he said.
