US General arrives in UAE to discuss bolstering defenses following Houthi attacks

Jan 24, 2022: UAE Defence ministry says it is ready to deal with threats and will take all necessary measures to protect the country from attack.

The UAE “is ready to deal with any threats and… takes all necessary measures to protect the state from all attacks,” the defence ministry as quoted as saying.

The United Arab Emirates says it has intercepted and destroyed two Houthi ballistic missiles targeting the country, with no casualties. The remnants of the intercepted ballistic missiles landed in separate areas around Abu Dhabi, the defense ministry said in a statement to the state news agency WAM on Monday.

The Houthi-run Al-Masira television channel said the group would release details of a “wide-ranging military operation” against Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in a matter of hours amid concerns over further escalation of tensions in the region during Yemen’s years-long civil war.

For more than six years, Iranian-backed Houthis have been fighting the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen – which includes the United Arab Emirates – repeatedly launching cross-border missile and drone strikes on Saudi Arabia, and bombing Abu Dhabi.

In an attack on the 17th of January this year in the capital of the UAE, three people were killed.

The missile fire disrupted traffic at Abu Dhabi International Airport, home to flag carrier Etihad long-haul aircraft carrier, for about an hour after the attack. In Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, state media reported late Sunday that a Houthi ballistic missile had landed in the south of the kingdom, injuring two foreigners and damaging workshops and vehicles in an industrial area.

Meanwhile, the Saudi-led coalition has also stepped up air strikes on Houthi strongholds in Yemen.

A bomb blast near the northern city of Saada on Friday killed at least 60 people and wounded at least 20 others in the Houthi-held capital, Sanaa. The increase raises fears of a worsening humanitarian crisis in Yemen, where the World Food Program warns that more than 5 million people are on the brink of famine and 50,000 more are living in famine-like conditions.
