South Korea reports new daily records for coronavirus cases and deaths

Dec 13, 2021: At least one person has died in the UK after contracting the omicron variant of the corona virus, as authorities warn that the new corona virus strain is spreading at an “abnormal” rate.

Fearing another punishing wave in the country, the British, following their government advice in hundreds, have lined up at vaccine centers to take booster shots.

Since the first cases of Omicron were discovered in the UK on November 27, Prime Minister Johnson has imposed strict sanctions. On Sunday, he urged people to take a third shot to prevent health services from being overwhelmed as he warned of a “tidal wave” of infections.

Data released on Friday showed that the effectiveness of the vaccine against symptomatic infections was significantly reduced by Omicron with just two doses, but the third dose increased protection by more than 70%. Parliament is due to vote on Tuesday on whether to implement further measures, including ordering people to work from home, wear masks in public places and use the COVID-19 pass in some places.

On Monday, the pound fell 0.4 percent to $1.3225, while it was broadly steady against the euro at 85.29 pence.

Meanwhile, the National Health Service announced that the online vaccine booking system was overwhelmed, suggesting people should return at a later date.

“The COVID vaccine booking service is currently facing extremely high demand so is operating a queueing system,” the National Health Service said on Twitter. “For all others experiencing waits, we would advise trying again later today or tomorrow.”

The government wants to offer a booster shot to all adults by the New Year, an ambitious goal in the run-up to the Christmas holidays, and that vaccinating one million people a day is almost double the current 530,000 daily. COVID-19 has killed more than 146,000 people in the UK, one of the worst gangs in the world.

After COVID-19 was first detected in China in late 2019, Johnson faced criticism for initially resisting lockdown. He has also been criticised for overseeing mistakes in transferring patients into care homes, and for building a costly test-and-trace system that failed to stop a deadly second wave.
