UN inquires India to take note of human rights violations in Kashmir

The United Nations has written to the Indian government asking it to investigate human rights abuses in Jammu and Kashmir since August 5 last year.

According to South Asian Wire, a letter published on the website of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights on Wednesday detailed details of alleged violations of the communications system, arrests and other human rights violations following the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special constitutional status as mentioned. The letter was sent to India on May 4 this year but has been published on the website today.

According to the letter, if the Indian government does not respond to the letter within 60 days, the letter will be made public and presented to the Human Rights Council. From January to July, Muslims and other minorities living in Kashmir were called to military camps and subjected to repeated abuses by security forces. According to South Asian Wire, the letter further states that if the allegations are substantiated, it would amount to a violation of human rights under sections 2, 6, 7, 9, 21, 26 and 27 of the ICCPR. These provisions were also ratified by the Indian government in 1979. The United Nations has also taken serious note of the deaths of three minors by security forces since August 5.
