US Navy rescues Iranian seamen adrift in Gulf

Nov 28, 2021: The U.S. Navy has rescued two Iranian seamen who had been adrift in Gulf waters since 8 days.

The Navy said the men were in “good health and spirit” despite their ordeal. The US Naval Forces Central Command, or NAVCENT, said “a US Navy ship (on Saturday) rescued two Iranian ships from a fishing vessel while they remained in the Gulf of Oman for eight days.”

The navy cargo ship, Charles Drew, arrived at the scene six hours after the tragic call with food, water and medical care, the statement said.

The two were taken on an Omani Coast Guard ship near the capital, Muscat. “The seamen were in good health and in good spirits at the time of the transfer,” he added.

“We commend the Government of Oman for its assistance and cooperation in assisting in the repatriation of Mariners,” said Vice Admiral Brad Cooper, Commander of the NAVCENT.

The United States and its regional allies have expressed concerns about Iran, which has previously been accused of attacking shipping in the region. Tehran denies the allegations.

Since February, Iran and its arch-enemy Israel have been accused of being involved in what analysts have called a “shadow war” involving attacks on ships connected to each country in waters around the Gulf.
