As 5 more in WI squad test positive for COVID-19, fate of PakvWI hangs in balance

Dec 9, 2021: The West Indies cricket team arrived in Karachi on Thursday to play three T20s and as many ODIs against Pakistan.

West Indian cricketers and team management officials arrived in Karachi from Dubai, where samples for the Covid 19 test were taken. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) sources said that the cricketers will remain in quarantine at the hotel till their corona test is negative.

West Indies cricket team will play T20 and ODI series in Pakistan. The first match of the T20 series between Pakistan and West Indies will be played on December 13 at the National Stadium Karachi.

Earlier this year, the New Zealand cricket team called off its tour of Pakistan, minutes before the first match was due to begin in the Pakistani city of Rawalpindi, citing security concerns.

New Zealand’s team was due to take on Pakistan in its first match on Pakistani soil for 18 years in Rawalpindi in September this year.

Later the same month, England’s joint men’s and women’s tour of Pakistan was cancelled due to concerns over “mental and physical well-being”, according to the England and Wales Cricket Board.

The historic trip, which would have been the first ever by an England women’s team and the first by their male counterparts since 2005, was in doubt from the moment New Zealand pulled out of their own series in Pakistan on Friday citing a security threat.

On the other hand, following the cancellations by New Zealand and England back in September, Cricket West Indies (CWI) Chief Executive Officer Johnny Grave said that the cricket body is planning to fulfil its tour commitments with all countries, including Pakistan.

“We intend to fulfil the responsibilities of tours,” he had reiterated. However, the CEO had added that the board will follow standard procedures.

The West Indies is set to play 3 T20 internationals followed by 3 ODIs against Pakistan, all to be held in Karachi. The matches will be played as per the following schedule; 13 Dec – 1st T20I, Karachi, 14 Dec – 2nd T20I, Karachi, 16 Dec – 3rd T20I, Karachi, 18 Dec – 1st ODI, Karachi, 20 Dec – 2nd ODI, Karachi and 22 Dec – 3rd ODI, Karachi. The team will depart from Karachi on the 23rd of December.
