Lahore, 15th July: The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the world may have entered the early stages of the third wave of coronavirus pandemic.
WHO declares that the
fast-spreading Delta variant has caused a spike in coronavirus cases across the world, hence wiping out the progress made through vaccines.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Wednesday that after the emergence of the Delta variant in 111 countries, the global number of infections has risen for four straight weeks. Similarly, the death rate has also risen after 10 straight weeks of decline.
WHO Director-General addressed the WHO’s Emergency Committee on COVID-19 and said the Delta variant is increasing by growing social mixing and inconsistent use of public health measures.
According to WHO,
more than four million people have died due to COVID-19 globally and that the Delta variant has become the dominant strain worldwide.
As per the data collected on Wednesday, Russia reported a record-high number of 786 coronavirus cases, while new infections are at a six-month high in the UK.
Meanwhile, in the past month in Indonesia, the rate of coronavirus cases has jumped nearly sevenfold with 1000 daily deaths. Reportedly the residents are pitching in to help gravediggers keep up with the daily fatalities.
Tedros said after increased vaccination rates in Europe and North America, there was a decline in cases and deaths, however, those trends have now reversed and the world is in an early stage of a third wave.
Ghebreyesus lamented that due to lack of access to vaccines, most of the world’s population is susceptible to infection. While, on the other hand, nations with ample supplies of vaccines have reopened their societies and lifted social distancing.
Ghebreyesus added, “To meet WHO’s target of vaccinating at least 10% of the population of every country by September, 40% by the end of 2021 and 70% by mid-2022, the world will need 11 billion doses.”
He pointed out that their organization sees a shocking disparity regarding the global distribution of vaccine doses and unequal access to life-saving tools.
Although G7 nations have guaranteed to donate a combined one billion doses over the next year, the WHO chief says that even much more is needed and much faster.
