Women in Gilgit-Baltistan showcase brilliant sporting talent

Oct 8, 2021: The beautiful valley of Gilgit-Baltistan is fast becoming a talent hotspot for women’s sports in Pakistan.

The region has already produced many talented sports women who have made the country proud and seeing them shine as superstars in Pakistan have encouraged other girls living in the mountains of Gilgit to play sports.

Hundreds of girls from different villages of Gilgit competed in two sports held last week. Gilgit-Baltistan Girls Football League and Gilgit Girls Cricket Tournament.

The eight-team football event was hosted by Sisters Karishma and Sameera of Shams Football Club. The cricket event was organized by Athlete Misbah Hina in association with Right to Play Pakistan.

About 10 teams took part in the tournament, which allowed more than 150 girls to showcase their talents at the lowest level. Organizer and volleyball athlete Misbah Hina said that she is excited to see the girls participate in the tournament with full energy.

The purpose of holding this event for girls was to give them more opportunities in cricket. There were 10 teams, all from Gojal villages, who took part in the event, Misbah said.

“It was a great event. The energy that the girls showed was really amazing. It has inspired me to organize more events for them in the future. It’s good to see them happy. I hope they will continue to help girls in sports,” Misbah said.

Teams made of players ranging from ages 13 to 29, from the villages of Gilmit, Passu, Shisket, Ghalapan, Sarteez, Gircha, Jamalabad and Khudabad participated in the tournament.

The participants of the tournament felt that they needed more such activities so that sports could become a means of empowering the girls of the valley.

The large number of women at the games also encouraged locals in the valley to visit the grounds and cheer for the girls. It was a pleasant sight for them to see young girls on ground competing with such passion and energy.

The biggest win and the most important lesson for the girls was celebrating the success of their right to play, lifting the trophy and telling the world that sports can change their lives for the better.
