Xiaomi Becomes the World’s No.1 Smartphone Company
Back in the April-June 2021 quarter, Xiaomi became the world’s second-largest smartphone company for the first time, pushing Apple to third place. Now, it has surpassed even Samsung to take the crown.
Yes, for the first time, Xiaomi has surpassed Samsung to become the world’s number one smartphone company for at least one month.
A research company reported that Xiaomi sold more smartphones than Apple and Samsung in June 2021, selling 26% more smartphones than it did in May 2021, accounting for 17.1% of the global phone market share.
Samsung and Apple were second and third with 15.7% and 14.3%, respectively.
However, reports also indicate that Xiaomi’s lead could be temporary since a new wave of coronavirus in Vietnam affected Samsung’s phone production in June, reducing the number of phones available.
Samsung also stated in its second-quarter earnings report that production problems due to the lockdown in Vietnam were expected to return to normal soon.
According to details, ever since US sanctions have affected sales of Huawei phones, Xiaomi has made aggressive efforts to fill the gap.
The company is replacing Huawei in China, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, reports say. These are the markets where Huawei phones used to make big money.
A few days ago, another company, Strategy Analytics, also reported that Xiaomi was selling the most phones between April and June, with a market share of 25%.
Most of Xiaomi’s phones are aimed at the low-income or middle class, but now the Chinese company wants to increase its stake in higher-end flagship phones, which are still dominated by Samsung and Apple.
Under this strategy, Xiaomi has introduced the Mi 11 Ultra smartphone this year, priced at 5,999 yuan, while its first foldable phone is priced at 9,999 yuan.
