14 dead after cable car crash in Italy

Rome May 24, 2021: A mountain ridge cable car plunged to the ground close to Italy’s northern city of Verbania on Sunday, killing 14 people, according to authorities. A 9-year-old child seriously injured in the incident was taken to a medical clinic in the city of Turin yet couldn’t be saved, the National Corps for Mountain and Speleological Rescue said in an announcement.

There were 15 people reportedly in the cabin at the time of the incident and the treatment of a seriously injured 5-year-old child continues.

Italian President Sergio Mattarella, Prime Minister Mario Draghi, European Council President Charles Michel, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Parliament President David Sassoli communicated their profound sorrow and condolences over the mishap in their messages.

The Verbania Public Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation concerning the incident on the Stresa-Mottarone streetcar line, as per regional media reports.
