An earthquake in Eastern Tajikistan’s Rasht district has killed five people and severely damaged dozens of homes.

The Tajik Emergency Committee says that the earthquake destroyed dozens of homes in three villages in Tajikabad District as well as also partially damaged power lines.

According to foreign media, the quake struck from a depth of about 10 km, at 7:14 am, with a magnitude of 5.9. It affected an area of up to 27 km in the Rasht district.

The quake also affected the southwestern part of the country’s capital, Dushanbe, according to media reports.

According to Russian media, the Tajik president Emomali Rakhmon has ordered a commission of inquiry led by the prime minister to investigate the matter further.

It is to be noted that geographically, Tajikistan is known to be a mountainous region, popular for hiking and climbing. According to Professor Mark van der Meijde, mountains hold a certain influence over earthquakes wherein they might either reduce the impact of the calamity or intensify it further by spreading it to further regions.
