In a world where people are striving to give momentum to feminism in Pakistan and awarding women’s rights to them, allowing them equal opportunities alongside men, PMLN insists to belittle the efforts.

According to reports of Baaghi TV, PMLN leader and daughter to former PM Sharif, Maryam Nawaz, was arrested by NAB officials outside Kot Lakhpat jail on 8th August, 2019. However, since then many opposition leaders including PMLN leader and PPP’s Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, have argued against the arrest stating that jail is not a place for women.

Pakistan’s leading talk show host and abchorperson, Mubasher Lucman has urged all feminists to join him in denouncing PMLN for implying that women are not equal to men denouncing the efforts of countless men and women who work day in and day out to ensure that women are provided equal opportunities and basic rights.

“How dare they say that women should not be put in jails?”, he stated adding, “Let us support equality and accept that just like men, women can also be criminals and they too should be punished just like men”.

That is what true feminism is all about equal rights, with which comes equal responsibility. After all, women cannot have the cake and eat it too! You cannot demand power yet use the “woman card” when it comes to receiving punishment for your crimes. How then can opposition leaders demands that Maryam Nawaz should not complete jail time for the crime she is responsible for?

Moreover, for the opposition that wants to improve the way women are treated in jails, you must do the same for men. They are humans too.

Women are put in jails everyday. How is Maryam Nawaz any different then? Are we somehow implying that she is not a woman? We need to accept that “entitled” women can and should also be put in jail if they are proven to be criminals.

Also, keeping in mind Bilalwal Bhutto Zardari’s statement of “mardon say muqabla karo” in the Parliament the day before, it clearly refers to how women are incapable of struggle and resistance in this political strata. Not only this, but it trivialises the sacrifices and struggles that women have put together till date.

Thereby, Baaghi TV urges feminists to come together and denounce PMLNs notion of putting down women’s efforts and progress because punishment should also be equal for all irrespective of gender and/or social standing. Maryam Nawaz should not be any different in the eyes of the law compared to a woman coming from the slums accused of stealing to fill the belly’s of her children.
