May 6, 2021: According to Forbes, Doug Parker, the Chief Executive Officer at American Airlines said he fasted for one day this Ramadan in an effort to empathize with the Muslim employees working at the airline. He joined millions of other Muslims who fast during the month after receiving an invitation from a Muslim employee group.
He took to LinkedIN, saying he understood the goal of fasting was to practice empathy for fellow human beings and so he decided to fast for a day. He also added that to him fasting helped him feel other people’s pain, suffering, loneliness, poverty and hunger and that it connects people as humans. He also urged other people to refrain from eating and drinking for an entire day to experience what it is like for Muslims to fast and also to comprehend what life is like for impoverished people.
It has recently become popular for US airlines to support popular causes. Earlier in the year, Delta Airlines demonstrated support for critics of Georgia voter laws that limited access to the polls for some colored people and some airlines have been known to campaign for LGBTQ rights and carbon neutrality of the planet. By Tuesday, the post on LinkedIN by Parker had 13000 plus reactions and 536 comments.
