Federal Minister for Religious Affairs Noor-ul-Haq Qadri has opposed ban on conversion before the age of 18, saying that if one wants to convert at an earlier age, they cannot be stopped.

“We cannot support a ban on conversions before the age of 18,” he told a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on the Rights of Minorities.

He said that there have been many cases in which a person has voluntarily changed his religion before the age of 18. There are many examples of conversion to Islam before the age of 18, he stated.

Noor-ul-Haq Qadri said that if one wants to change his religion before the age of 18, it is his wish. However, marriage before the age of 18 is a separate issue and must not be mingled with this, he further said.

He said that the issue of setting a minimum age for marriage has been referred to the Islamic Ideological Council and if anyone is forcibly converting anyone to Islam in Sindh, it must be investigated.

The committee will summon Pir Mian Mithu of Barchundi Sharif, who is facing charges of forcible conversion of Hindu girls in rural Sindh, and tell him that what they are doing will tarnish the image of Islam and Pakistan, the Minister said.

On the other hand, Senator Dinesh Kumar told the committee that a new tradition of conversion has started in Balochistan.

He claimed that a religious leader in Dalbandin was telling scavengers and cleaners that if they converted to Islam, they would not have to do so.

Earlier this year, the committee recommended that only mature and sensible people will be allowed to convert and that they could do so by appearing before an additional session judge.
