The death toll due to the recent severe earthquake in Haiti, Latin America, of magnitude 7.2 on the Richter scale, has risen to 1,300. Rescue operations are afoot.
According to foreign media, rescue operations in Haiti continue and foreign aid has also started arriving. The earthquake aftershocks are still continuing with a magnitude of 5.2 on the Richter scale.
Officials said that about 6,000 people have also been injured, while the number of missing is unclear. Rescue operations are underway in the affected areas and hopes of getting the people buried under the debris out alive are slowly dying.
The Prime Minister of Haiti, Ariel Henry, has declared that he will expedite the relief work using all available government resources while imposing a month-long state of emergency across the country.
7.2 Magnitude Intensity Earthquake Kills 304 in Haiti
According to Ariel Henry, the rescue teams sent to are currently engaged in helping victims. He said, “At this time, it is most important for us to save as many survivors as possible buried in the debris. Local hospitals are reportedly under severe pressure due to having to treat a large number of injured people.”
He further added, “I have also made an air tour of the affected area of Les Cayes.”
US President Joe Biden has sent immediate assistance to help, expressing his sadness at the disaster. He also said that the USAID will help assess the damage and treat the injured as well as rebuild.
It should be noted that about 14,000 buildings were destroyed and equally affected by the 7.2 magnitude earthquake in Haiti on Saturday.
It is to be noted that Haiti was also hit by a severe earthquake in 2010 and it has not yet fully recovered from it.
