Woefully speaking, Pakistan is undergoing multifarious evils, but the most hazardous of them is corruption. Because corruption is the mother of all evils. It begets political, economical, and social problems for a country. Due to corruption, a country cannot flourish. Joe Biden, president of United States, said: “Corruption is a cancer that eats away at a citizen’s faith in democracy, diminishes the instinct for innovation and creativity”, and Olusegun Obasanjo, former president of Nigeria, said: “Corruption is the greatest single bane of our society”.

Corruption can be defined as, misuse of power by any authorized person. The authorized person may be a civil servant, politician, or bureaucrat. Corruption is the most menacing than poverty and unemployment. It is the biggest conflict in our country. It has been a part of our political and economic life since Pakistan’s inception. Not only corruption affects economic development, but it also affects the equitable distribution of resources across the population and increases income inequalities. The poor have to suffer because of this issue.

Corruption can be ramified into three kinds: Petty, Routine, and Chronic corruption. Petty corruption can be defined as, nepotism and favoritism. Corrupt people take advantage of available opportunities and appoint their relatives and friends to higher positions leaving deserving people. Routine corruption is defined as, bribery. Many corrupt people take bribes from compelled people for doing their important works such as transfer orders, appointment orders, and pension after retirement.

According to transparency international Pakistan, the most corrupt institutions of our country are the police (41.4%) and the judiciary (17.4%). In police, the highest rating of corruption is increasing exponentially in Pakistan. Many corrupt policemen and also police officers take bribes from compelled people. According to Islamic teachings, corruption is forbidden and there are several hadiths of the prophet Muhammad (saw) that prohibit it. It was narrated by Abdullah bin Amr that the messenger of Allah almighty said: “May the curse of Allah Almighty be upon the briber and the bribe recipient”.

Chronic corruption is defined as a person is doing corruption without thinking about the interest of the nation and fear of Allah almighty. There are many corrupt politicians in Pakistan; Asif Ali Zardari and Shahbaz Shareef are involved in corruption cases, but Nawaz Shareef has been the most corrupt politician in Pakistan as well as in the world.

In 2017, Nawaz Shareef was removed from the Prime Minister’s office by the Supreme Court of Pakistan regarding revelations of Panama papers case. In 2018, Pakistan’s Supreme Court disqualified Nawaz Shareef from holding public office and he was also sentenced to ten years in prison by an accountability court because Nawaz Shareef had more wealth than resources.

Asif Ali Zardari is also ranked as 2^nd most corrupt politician in Pakistan. On September 28, the court charged Asif Ali Zardari in a mega-money laundering case. Also in the park lane case, Asif Ali Zardari was accused of purchasing 307 acres of prime property in Islamabad at very low rates using front men.

Pakistan’s opposition leader Shahbaz Shareef is also ranked as 3^rd most corrupt politician in Pakistan. Shahbaz Shareef was arrested by an anti-graft body for his involvement in a housing scam.

We should be aware of people of corrupt rulers and help them in the selection of sincere leaders. We can know a sincere leader because the difference between a corrupt and honest person is that corrupt people have a price and honest people have value. We should select a sincere leader who works for the nation and his value and welfare of our country. We should be united to solve this problem and make an easy solution to this chronic disease.

Kofi Anan, former UN secretary-general, said: “If corruption is a disease, transparency is [an] essential part of its treatment”. We should improve transparency and spread it in every corner of our beloved country. We should start eradicating corruption from its base. We should aware not only of this generation but also of our coming generation. So that, if it is uprooted then cannot manage to start again.
