A 26-year-old youth from India state Haryana’s Jind district was allegedly shot dead in California of US after a dispute.

The victim, Kapil, hailed from Barah Kalan village of the district and was the only son a small farmer Ishwar Singh.

According to reports, the altercation occurred when Kapil objected to a man urinating in a public area near his workplace. The situation escalated, and the man allegedly opened fire, killing Kapil on the spot.

The family received news of the tragedy with shock. His body is expected to be brought back to India in about 15 days due to legal formalities in the US. Villagers have urged authorities to speed up the process so that the last rites can be performed in his hometown.

Kapil had gone to the United States two and a half years ago through the “donkey route,” an illegal migration path, in the hope of a better life. His family reportedly spent around ₹45 lakh on his migration. He leaves behind two sisters, one married and the other still studying.

The incident has once again highlighted the dangers faced by Indian migrants in the US. In recent years, several cases of violence against Indians have been reported, including the killing of Haryana’s Vivek Saini in Georgia earlier this year and the 2022 murder of a Sikh family in California.

Community groups have raised concerns over the rising risks, pointing to gun violence and possible hate crimes. Indian diaspora organisations have called for stronger measures to ensure the safety of Indian citizens in the US.

Kapil’s family members urged the union and state governments to make efforts to bring his body back.
