Annalena Baerbock, the new President of the UN General Assembly, inaugurated the 80th session of the global body in New York.
In her opening speech, Baerbock emphasized the importance of international cooperation for peace, development, and human rights, saying the session is an opportunity to show the world’s eight billion people that the United Nations still matters.
Annalena Baerbock said: “This is a year to adapt, to evolve, and to build the United Nations we need for the next 80 years, for the lifetimes of our children. It is a moment to show 8 billion people around the world why this organization still matters, why they are right to look to the streaming blue flag of the United Nations as a source of hope.”
The UN Secretary-General also stressed during the session that the organization’s founders established the global body 80 years ago not only to prevent war but also to address challenges such as poverty, hunger, and inequality.
The UN General Assembly Leaders’ Week will take place in New York from 22 to 30 September this year.
During this period, world leaders will participate in the General Assembly and several major meetings, including the commemoration of the UN’s 80th anniversary, a climate summit, and a global discussion on AI governance.
