In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, a tribunal has upheld the Modi-led Indian government’s ban on the Awami Action Committee (AAC) led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, further tightening the noose around pro-freedom political organisations in the territory.
The draconian Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Tribunal confirmed New Delhi’s March 11 notification that declared the AAC an “unlawful association” under the notorious UAPA. The tribunal echoed the Indian Home Ministry’s accusations that the AAC promoted the right to self-determination, raised political awareness, and mobilised support for Kashmiris’ freedom cause.
The ban targets the organisation founded by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, accusing him and other AAC leaders of delivering speeches and slogans that reflect the Kashmiri people’s aspiration for freedom from Indian occupation.
New Delhi has systematically outlawed almost all genuine political organisations in IIOJK to erase the indigenous resistance movement and impose silence through coercion.
The use of black laws like UAPA exposes India’s fear of the growing resolve of Kashmiris, who despite repression remain steadfast in their demand for the UN-pledged right to self-determination.
