A friend of mine is so cautious that, whether walking or driving, she’ll alter her route to avoid a black cat crossing her path. This behavior is rooted in the symbolism black cats hold across different cultures—some viewing them as omens of bad luck, while others see them as bearers of good fortune.

In various European traditions, black cats were commonly linked to witches, believed to bring misfortune if they crossed one’s path. However, Welsh folklore offers a different view, portraying black cats as signs of good fortune and reliable predictors of the weather (Owen, E. (2006). For centuries, especially up until the 1600s, cats, particularly black ones, were associated with witchcraft. During witch trials, even owning a cat could be considered proof of practicing magic. Today, some countries like the United States, Belgium, and Spain still view black cats as symbols of bad luck, especially around Halloween when they’re often depicted alongside witches in costumes.

Black cat superstitions trace back to ancient Greece, where mythology recounts how Zeus’s wife, Hera, punished her servant Galinthias by transforming her into a black cat for obstructing the birth of Hercules. Galinthias then served Hecate, the goddess of witchcraft, reinforcing the mystical associations surrounding black cats in different traditions.

In colonial America, black cats were believed to be linked to witches, who were thought to take on a feline form to remain hidden as they cast spells. A legend arose that witches could shape-shift into a black cat up to nine times, perhaps contributing to the myth that cats have nine lives. In modern pop culture, black cats frequently appear alongside witches or as symbols of magic. In Britain, interestingly, encountering a black cat is considered lucky, especially if it crosses one’s path.
