Aug 26, 2021: A joint session of parliament will be convened early next month to consider the changing situation in neighboring Afghanistan, National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser said Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters after meeting the chairman of the Senate, Asad Qaiser said the joint sitting would be held in the first week of next month at the end of the parliamentary year. Asked why the situation in Afghanistan was not properly debated in the National Assembly, Qaiser said there had already been camera sessions to discuss the issue.

“I intend to take the opposition into confidence on the issue of Afghanistan in September and take on board all concerns and views in a joint meeting or in a meeting of the National Security Council,” he added.

The main opposition parties in parliament have expressed serious concerns over the situation in Afghanistan and called on the government to convene a joint session of parliament immediately.

The opposition parties have sought a two-day joint session on the situation in Afghanistan before the presidential address to the joint session to formally launch the fourth parliamentary year of the current National Assembly.

Last week, the Senate Defense Committee called on the government to convene a joint sitting of parliament, urging the government to convene a joint sitting immediately to take Parliament into confidence so that the Afghanistan situation can be discussed and a way forward can be proposed.

The ultimate aim of the session will be how to proceed in the future and how to be partners in peace with a focus on progress and development of both Pakistan and Afghanistan.
