Amid the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan, Asaduddin Owaisi said that in early 2013, I had advised the government to open diplomatic channels with the Taliban to secure our strategic interests.

New Delhi: Since the occupation of Taliban in Afghanistan, the situation is continuously deteriorating. Meanwhile, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief and MP Asaduddin Owaisi has surrounded the government over the policy on Afghanistan. Owaisi has also referred to one of his speeches in Parliament in the year 2013, in which he has advocated for establishing dialogue with the Taliban to safeguard India’s strategic interests.

Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi wrote in his tweet, ‘The withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan was fixed. I made an appeal in 2013 itself to open diplomatic channels with the Taliban to protect our strategic interests. The Indian government had invested $3 billion in it. I had said but neither the Bharatiya Janata Party government nor the Congress paid heed. Now we have to see what will the Modi government do?

Owaisi said that in 2019 also I had reiterated my concerns about the inevitable truth about Afghanistan. However, when Pakistan, the US and the Taliban were talking in Moscow, the Prime Minister’s Office was counting the number of times the Prime Minister hugged the then US President Trump. We have not been told yet what is the government’s policy regarding Afghanistan?

He said, till now it is not clear whether India will recognize the Taliban or not, the government will have to open the channels of dialogue. As always, Narendra Modi’s government seems to be out of its original position. They start functioning only when a crisis comes at the door.”
