Air India plane crash: DGCA's first official statement

An Air India Express flight crashed in the South Indian state of Kerala after skidding off the runway while landing at Calicut International Airport.

According to the details, Air India Express Boeing 737-800 (VT-AXH), flight # IX-1344 from Dubai, overran the runway at Kozhikode (CCJ), India, breaking apart after falling down an embankment.

As per sources, there were 191 passengers on board including 6 crew members and the jet landed at 7:41 pm (local time). The aircraft, en route from Dubai, skidded off the runway with almost 200 passengers on board at Calicut airport upon landing.

A pilot and eleven passengers have died in the incident, according to preliminary media reports.

In a statement, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said the plane landed in heavy rain and after landing at Runway 10, it continued running until the end of the runway and fell down in the valley and broke into two. At least 24 ambulances and fire tenders have been rushed to the airport.

A local MLA TV Ibrahim said that many passengers have been admitted in hospital with injuries and luckily the plane did not catch fire. The Air India Express plane allegedly fell into a 30 feet deep gorge, while landing at the Calicut International Airport in Kozhikode. Rescue operations are underway. More details are awaited.
