LAHORE: The rules and regulations of Aitchison College have been flouted as tuition fees for the sons of former Federal Minister Ahad Cheema, a close friend and associate of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, have been pardoned without the approval of the Board of Governors (BoG) after Governor Punjab Balighur Rehman issued a letter misusing his power.
A scandal concerning the renowned educational institute, Aitchison College, has surfaced in which former minister, Ahad Cheema’s children have been pardoned from paying their tuition fees, an advantage given to them for having close ties with Prime Minister (PM), Shehbaz Sharif. According to informed sources, the tuition fees have been waived without a meeting of the Board of Governors (BoG) being convened or the BoG being consulted over the matter.

Instead, Governor Punjab Mian Balighur Rehman a member of the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) issued a directive to waive the fees for Ahad Cheema’s sons, Eisa Ahad Cheema and Mustafa Ahad Cheema, on orders of the recently re-elected PM.
Ahad Cheema’s wife, Saima Cheema applied for the request of a fee waiver. Although several meetings of the BoG were held to consider the situation, no final decision had been reached. However, Governor Punjab Balighur Rehman took it upon himself and approved Saima Cheema’s application after which the fees for Eisa Ahad Cheema and Mustafa Ahad Cheema were waived. Reportedly, Governor Punjab decided this on his own, without final consultation with the BoG, when neither the principal nor the Board of Governors (BoG) approved waiving the tuition fees.

This controversial decision by Governor Punjab, will not only harm the educational institute but will also result in the opening of a new Pandora’s box if the fees of the children are waived for having close ties to the PM when other children studying at Aitchison College are not allowed an equal advantage. It also stands to question, what is the fault of the other students in this, why must they pay their tuition fees?
According to informed sources, the college receives about 20 fee waiver requests annually but no student is allowed this waiver, so what makes this case any different? It is pertinent to mention that when the principal did not agree to the request on orders of the Prime Minister to assist his friend Ahad Cheema’s sons, the Governor of Punjab issued an order waiving all the rules and regulations concerning the fees.
