The AJK Election Commission announced Monday that the presidential election for Azad Jammu and Kashmir will be held on August 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The election commission stated in a statement that nomination papers would be filed on August 12 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., and officials will scrutinize them on the same day.
Candidates have until August 16 to withdraw their nominations (11:30 am).
The polling will take place at the AJK Legislative Assembly Hall on August 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., according to the notification.
The newly-elected president will take the oath of office on August 24, the same day as outgoing President Sardar Masood Khan’s term ends.
Sardar Abdul Qayyum Niazi, a PTI candidate, was chosen as the new Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir by a large margin last week.
President AJK Sardar Masood Khan had administered the oath to him, following which he became the region’s 13th prime minister, succeeding former premier Raja Farooq Haider.
Niazi won the presidency with a comfortable margin of 33 votes.
Niazi had won the LA-18 constituency in the AJK elections. He wasn’t one of the front-runners for the coveted position. Initially, the AJK PM candidates were Barrister Sultan Mahmood and Sardar Tanveer Ilyas Khan.
After the recent Azad Jammu and Kashmir elections, the PTI came out on top, capturing 32 seats in the assembly.
