Eddie Murphy to receive Lifetime Achievement Award by the American Film Institute (AFI).
The highest honor for the contributions to film, AFI trustees announce a celebration to acknowledge the achievers on April 18th. 2026 at the Dolby Theatre.

Moreover, the board chair, Kathleen Kennedy praised Murphy for his contributions saying, “an American icon” and “a trailblazing force in the art forms of film, television and stand-up comedy.” She also says, “Across five decades, his enduring impact on our culture has inspired artists and audiences alike, and AFI is proud to honor him with the 51st AFI Life Achievement Award.”

Turning 65 this year, Murphy is the fourth Black artist to achieve this award after Sidney Poitier, Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington.

Murphy gained Hollywood’s attention after his appearance in Saturday Night Live in the early 1980s. This was followed by his reliable box-office draws including 48 Hours, Trading Places and Beverly Hills Cop.

Other box office hits include Beverly Hills Cop 2, Coming to America and The Nutty Professor, and family films including as Dr Dolittle, Mulan, Shrek and Daddy Day Care.
His recent works include a new documentary called, “Being Eddie.” Streaming on Netflix, the compilation depicts Eddie’s life, career, and struggles. Furthermore, speaking his mind Eddie said, “It’s always wonderful to win stuff, but if I don’t win, I don’t give a (expletive). “I’m still Eddie in the morning.”

Additionally, during the 2023 Golden Globes the actor won Cecil B. DeMille Award. Upon receiving the award, Murphy gave his statement saying, “I’m talking to all the new, up-and-coming dreamers and artists in the room tonight. I want to let you know that there is a definitive blueprint that you can follow to achieve success, prosperity, longevity and peace of mind. I’ve followed it my whole career. It’s very simple. Just do these three things: pay your taxes, mind your business.”
