SEOUL: American live-streamer, Johnny Somali, indicted for causing a “commotion” at a convenience store as confirmed by Seoul prosecutors, is set to face time in prison.
According to a CNN report, Ramsey Khalid Ismael, popularly known as Johnny Somali, has been indicted after he caused a “commotion” at a convenience store. The 24 year-old influencer is notorious for posting provocative, highly offensive video stunts due to which he has been banned by multiple social media companies, after critics highlighted his harassing of locals in Asian countries in an effort to boost his online viewership. According to a CNN report, earlier this month, the live-streamer posted an online apology after he was accused of desecrating a South Korean monument [‘Comfort Woman’] honoring women subjected to sexual slavery in World War II.
Public backlash over the desecration reflects frustration with foreigners in Asian countries exploiting local customs for online fame. Similarly, Japanese news reports have shown international content creators dodging railway fares, “nuisance dancing” in subway trains in Tokyo and other similar antics.

Earlier this month, a 65-year-old US tourist was arrested for carving letters into a shrine gate, similarly, an elderly Australian man was arrested for engaging in sexual intercourse on shrine grounds. According to a report by the Kyodo News agency, a live-streamer was arrested in Osaka over suspicion of trespassing a construction site. Somali’s visit to Japan has also garnered negative attention with many criticizing his antics – posting videos taunting commuters about the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Professor of sociology at University of California, Berkeley, John Lie has cautioned Somali’s actions highlight what it means to disregard cultural boundaries. “There’s nothing significant there save his provocateur persona: a garden-variety character in today’s social mediascape”, Lie said.
