Another journalist disappears from Karachi

Karachi press club member and senior journalist Waris Raza was reportedly taken away and detained last night. His family was not informed of his location for several hours and neither were they told for what crime he was arrested. 

According to reports, Waris Raza’s daughter Lila Raza tweeted on social networking website Twitter confirming that her father was detained by law enforcement agencies. “My father did nothing wrong. He only told the truth,” she said.

A tweet from the Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJ) Twitter account also said that Waris Raza, who had booked a 70-year-old historical struggle as an editor, had been detained from his home late at night and was transferred to an undisclosed location. The KUJ condemned the arrest and demanded his immediate release.

According to the KUJ’s spokesperson, this arrest was alarming and an attack on freedom of press. Efforts are currently being made to suppress every strong voice in the country that believes in freedom of press and freedom of expression, he said. “KUJ has demanded that senior journalist Waris Raza be released immediately,” he stated.

Journalism organizations have also announced protests against the disappearance and forced abduction of Waris Raza.
