Asad Umar Explains Philosophy Behind Targeted Lockdowns

Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives, Asad Umar presided over a meeting at the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) where he was briefed about the developing corona pandemic situation.

On the meeting on Monday, the latest situation of the targeted lockdown countrywide by Provincial Chief Secretary, assessment of the requirement of oxygen, the overview of the pandemic statistics, the latest situation of the Resource Management System, and the details of the Pak Nigehbaan App were discussed.

While expressing his views, the Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar said that the purpose of the targeted lockdown is to pinpoint highly affected areas instead of having to lockdown whole sections of the population. He said that ensuring the wearing of masks in urban areas is being worked on. It was said in the meeting that there are 549 targeted lock downs countrywide.

Chief Secretary Khyber Pakhtunkhwa said that there is no administrative impediment to the imposition of smart lockdown. Additional Chief Secretary Punjab told the meeting that quite a lot of corona cases have emerged over the past few days in Punjab. He said that the Provincial Cabinet Committee is preparing a strategy for handling the appearance of new hotspots over a wide area.

Chief Secretary Sindh told the NCOC that a notification has been issued to the business located in the lockdown areas to not penalize their employees for not going to the office. It has been ensured that the notification will be obeyed. He also informed of the recommendation to extend the lockdown to further affected areas. Chief Secretary Balochistan informed the meeting that the planning for smart lockdown has been completed. According to the plan only one person will be allowed to leave home for buying necessaries.

Chief Secretary Azad Jammu and Kashmir said that there is complete lockdown in four districts. Chief Secretary Gilgit-Baltistan said that power has been given to the local administration where the Deputy Commissioner took measures to stop the spread of the virus in the relevant areas.

He said that the proportion of people who have recovered from the virus is nearly 70%. Out of a total of 1,288 cases, 865 patients tested negative on retesting.
