Asif Ali Zardari has been elected as the 14th President of Pakistan for the second time, marking a significant victory at the age of 68. He secured a resounding win in the presidential election, garnering 255 votes, while his opponent, 75-year-old Mahmood Khan Achakzai, received 119 votes from the combined National Assembly and Senate.
Zardari faces considerable challenges ahead. The PTI has expressed its intent to disrupt parliamentary proceedings, which could exacerbate the country’s already dire economic situation. As Pakistan grapples with a critical economic juncture, the question arises: can the nation afford to tolerate parliamentary hooliganism instead of addressing its core issues?

A crucial task for Zardari will be to persuade Khan and PTI-backed legislators to adopt a proactive stance in history rather than a destructive one. Given PML-N’s current circumstances, they are unable to play a similar role. Regardless of one’s personal opinions about Zardari, he possesses a unique ability to persuade those in power to recognize the benefits of cooperating with various proposals.
Although it may not be explicitly outlined in his job description, Zardari must exert significant influence to ensure the smooth functioning of the government and the delivery of essential services. Often hailed as the “Dealmaker Extraordinaire,” Zardari is perceived as the glue necessary to hold the government together during tumultuous times.
