Sydney, May 7 2021: Australian tourism minister, Dan Tehan has said that it is very hard to determine when they country’s borders will be completely open bu that it is unlikely to happen before late 2022.

Australia has so far reported just over 29000 cases of the corona virus but its vaccine roll out has been sluggish so far as only 2.5 million vaccines have been administered across the country with a population of 25 million. The US$40 billion tourism of industry of Australia is likely to suffer from the almost three year break in routine international visitors who used to number around 1 million per month before the pandemic and now stands at just 7000. Anyone who wishes to visit has to be kept under a 14 day hotel quarantine and this is where most of the cases have been detected.

According to Tehan, the latest global corona virus surge particularly in the Indian sub-continent has smashed any hopes of return to normalcy and that Australia’s blanket ban on arrivals was the only solution to keep the country corona free. Since March last year, all Australians have been banned from traveling abroad and it is hard for foreign visitors to get exemptions to enter.

Hoping to soften the economic hammer blow from the almost non-existent tourism, the country had recently established a travel bubble with its neighbour across the Tasman Sea, New Zealand but the idea shows mixed success with travel being paused between cities where there is a sudden appearance of the virus.

Making an official statement, Tehan said, “The hope would be that we might be able to see a few more travel bubbles set up and we’d be able to see more travel undertaken, but we’re in a pandemic and a lot depends on how we are going to deal with it.”
