UK pledges $34million in Indo-Pacific security pact with Australia

Sept 16, 2021: Australians squirmed on Thursday when US President Joe Biden thanked the Australian PM for joining a major defense alliance – but apparently forgot his name.

Instead of naming him for his role in the US-UK-Australia agreement, Prime Minister Scott Morrison was initially described as “that fellow down-under”.

In a White House televised announcement, Biden was spotted by a large video display of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Morrison of Australia, each of whom participated from afar.

“Thank you, Boris and… and I want to thank that fellow Down Under. Thank you very much, pal. Appreciate it, Mr Prime Minister,” Biden said as he revealed an agreement that will equip Australia with nuclear-powered submarines.

Biden appeared to be recovering as he turned to his formal remarks and correctly identified the Australian leader, who had earlier responded with a smile and a thumbs up.

But for some it was too late. “Thanks Pal”: Biden Morrison seems to have forgotten his name, “Australian paper Cairns ran a headline in the post.

An analysis by the Sydney Morning Herald suggests that the defense deal may not have gotten off to the bright start that Morrison had hoped for, when US President Joe Biden appeared to forget his name at a crucial moment. The paper said the apparent mistake opened the window for “Australia’s position in the powers of the younger brother nature”.

But James Morrwo’s analysis in the Australian paper Sydney Daily Telegraph said that this strange moment could not diminish the significance of the agreement at a time of growing Chinese military influence in the Asia-Pacific region.

“Not even Joe Biden forgetting the name of ‘that fellow Down Under’ could mar the importance of what has just played out over the last 12 hours,” he wrote.
