Baghdad Has No More Need of US Forces: PM Mustafa Al-Kadhimi

Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi has stated that his country no longer needs US troops to fight the terrorist group ISIS.

According to foreign news agency Reuters, Mustafa al-Kadhimi’s statement came at a time when he is to visit the United States for a meeting with US President Joe Biden.

The Iraqi Prime Minister did not announce a date of US combat troops’ withdrawal but stated there was no more need for them on Iraqi soil.

He said Iraq’s security forces and military were perfectly capable of defending the country without US-led coalition forces.

Mustafa al-Kadhimi further said any withdrawal schedule would be based on the needs of Iraqi forces, who have demonstrated their ability in combating ISIS.

“A special timetable is needed for the fight against ISIS and the preparation of our forces, and that depends on the negotiations we will have in Washington,” he said.

The United States and Iraq agreed in April that a “training and advisory mission” would mean the end of the role of US combat troops in Iraq. The two leaders are expected to meet at the White House on Monday to finalize the extraction time.

There are currently 2,500 US troops in Iraq, 500 less than the originally 3000 troops. Late last year, former US President Donald Trump ordered this reduction.

The US-led coalition of foreign forces provided training and air support to Iraqi forces after ISIS took control of large parts of northern Iraq and Syria in 2014.

It is to be noted that ISIS had claimed control of several areas in Iraq.
