Lahore, 26th February: Pakistani cricketer Umar Akmal’s ban gets reduced from 18 months to one year.

Baaghi TV: According to reports, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has reduced the ban on Umar Akmal to 12 months and fined him Rs 4.25 million for breaching the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) anti-corruption code.

A press release by the PCB said that Akmal had been found guilty of violating Article 2.4.4 of the PCB Anti-Corruption Code and a fine of Rs 4.25 million had been imposed on him.

PCB  said, “The right-handed batsman will now be eligible to reintegrate into competitive cricket subject to deposits of a fine of PKR 4,250,000 and undergoing the program of rehabilitation under the PCB Anti-Corruption Code.”

According to reports from Baaghi TV, last year before the start of the fifth Pakistan Super League (PSL) Umar Akmal was suspended in February 2020 for not reporting details of corruption.

The cricketer’s brother Kamran told AFP, “It’s a big relief for Umar. He wants to play cricket and return to the field.”

PCB statement by the cricket board said that the court announced its decision on the appeals filed by the PCB and Akmal against the order of the independent adjudicator.

The CAS turned down the request to return two mobile phones to Akmal which are currently in the PCB’s possession for a separate investigation.

The PCB reminded all cricketers to report incidences of match-fixing and spot-fixing when they take place to help the anti-corruption unit effort to eliminate the offence of fixing.

It is to be noted that in April 2020, the PCB had banned Akmal for three years after finding him guilty of breaching Article 2.4.4 of the PCB’s Anti-Corruption Code.

Umar Akmal has so far played 16 Tests, 121 one-day internationals, as well as 84 Twenty20 internationals.
