Bashar al-Assad Sworn In For 4th Term as Syrian President

Bashar al-Assad has been sworn in, on Saturday, as Syrian president for the fourth time in seven years amid a worsening economic crisis in the war-ravaged country.
According to media reports, the opponents of Bashar al-Asad and the West called the May election illegal and shameful. The swearing-in ceremony was held at the Presidency in the presence of more than 600 guests including members of parliament, political leaders and military officers.
According to the United Nations, more than 80 percent of Syrians live below the poverty line and the Syrian currency value is constantly decreasing and basic resources are lacking, or goods are being sold in the market at unequal prices. The large-scale war in Syria is over, but parts of the country are not under government control and there are foreign forces and fighters in various parts of the country.

About half of Syria’s pre-war population is homeless or living as refugees in neighbouring countries and Europe, with some 500,000 people killed and thousands missing during the war, while the country’s infrastructure has been destroyed. The clashes erupted in 2011 when the government cracked down on peaceful protesters, turning into an armed uprising against the family of Bashar al-Assad, who has ruled the country for decades.
Bashar al-Assad has been targeted by the West for extending sanctions and isolating himself, backed by Iran and Russia, who have sent and supported their forces, which have helped him during the war.
