29th June: Beyoncé unveiled a short teaser trailer of her new visual album, ‘Black is King,’ on Saturday night at beyonce.com.

Her album is inspired by last year’s ‘The Lion King,’ and is headed to Disney+ on July 31st.

The trailer revealed the superstar reading a well-worn copy of Robert Farris Thompson’s 1971 book ‘Black Gods and Kings.’ In one visual, she is seen smiling whilst cradling a baby in her arms by the water, whilst a basket is swept by a tide.

In a voice-over, she says, ‘The ancestors never left you.’ Then she continues ‘You can’t wear a crown with your head down.’

Her visual album “reimagines the lessons of ‘The Lion King’ for today’s young kings and queens in search of their own crowns,” reports a news release from Disney and Parkwood Entertainment, noting that the cast and crew “represent diversity and connectivity.”

“The voyages of Black families, throughout time, are honored in a tale about a young king’s transcendent journey through betrayal, love, and self-identity. His ancestors help guide him toward his destiny, and with his father’s teachings and guidance from his childhood love, he earns the virtues needed to reclaim his home and throne.”

It is further reported that “These timeless lessons are revealed and reflected through Black voices of today, now sitting in their own power. … The film highlights the beauty of tradition and Black excellence.”

The new visual album follows closely on the heels of the superstar’s Juneteenth track ‘Black Parade,’ which was an anthem about Black Lives Matter after the death of George Floyd.
