Brazil is one of the countries severely hit by the ongoing pandemic, however, it is the way that the government is handling the situation that is problematic.
According to US news-outlet, Foreign Policy (FP), serving President Bolsonaro’s diplomacy has failed and left the state isolated as COVID-19 continues to spread. According to FP reports, “Ideological fixations have been a diplomatic and a public health disaster” for Brazil.
Despite rising concerns, the President and his leadership continue to remain in denial as reports have come in that Bolsonaro himself has fallen prey to the novel virus. Meanwhile, the number of deaths across Brazil is reported as 65,000 and almost 1.6 million cases. Moreover, the President has repeatedly termed the novel virus as “a little flu” all while questioning the need to maintain social distancing. According to reports of FP, two ministers of health have been fired since the outbreak for what is concerned, going against the President.
It is further reported by the US news-outlet that Bolsonaro has failed in other structures as well including: Foreign Policy, and while the state should focus its policy on the basis of pragmatism, realism, and the national interest specifically with regards to its standing in BRICS (BRIC refers to countries namely: Brazil, Russia, India and China, deemed to be developing countries at a similar stage of newly advanced economic development) and ties with countries other than the US, the Brazilian policy is instead targeted at globalism and Marxism.
It is to be noted that so far Bolsonaro’s policy considers Chinese communism as a threat to its progress despite exporting nearly 30 percent of its total exports to China. Adding to this is the approach of some high-ranking Brazilian members of cabinet who claim that Europeans have no idea about climate change. According to reports of FP, the state is fast approaching diplomatic isolation due to the Brazilian President’s inability to maintain the country’s interests in a pragmatic view.
According to reports, Paraguay and Uruguay have closed their borders with Brazil, in the hopes of restraining the spread of the Coronavirus. In a time when the ongoing pandemic has forced institutions towards stricter checks and balances, to ensure a safer and progressive environment, against “populist irrationality”. Otherwise, Brazil would inevitably suffer from the consequences.
According to reports of FP, Brazil must pursue its national interests while attempting to maintain its traditions, for which they must be committed to working on their foreign policy and international law to ensure peaceful settlement of disputes.
