Lahore, 18th August: Former Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, who fled the country on Sunday as the Taliban closed in on Kabul, is in the United Arab Emirates, according to the foreign ministry.

A statement from the UAE’s Foreign Ministry said, “The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation can confirm that the UAE has welcomed President Ashraf Ghani and his family into the country on humanitarian grounds.”

According to the Afghan ambassador in Tajikistan, Ashraf Ghani fled Kabul with bags containing 169 million US dollars. Ghani fled Afghanistan on Sunday evening without making an announcement or providing specific information about his destination.

Kabul is safer under Taliban than it was under Ashraf Ghani, says Russia

Ghani said he fled to avoid a “flood of bloodshed” as the Taliban entered the presidential palace and declared the war “over.”

At a press conference in Dushanbe, Afghan Ambassador to Tajikistan Mohammad Zahir Aghbar accused Ghani of embezzling $169 million and acknowledged Amrullah Saleh, Ghani’s vice president, as the legitimate head of the Afghan state.

Afghan Defense Minister Bismillah Khan Mohammadi asked Interpol to arrest President Ashraf Ghani, who abdicated and fled Afghanistan, for “selling out the motherland.”

On Wednesday, the Afghan embassy in Tajikistan requested that Ghani be detained by Interpol on embezzlement charges. On August 16, Tajikistan denied former Afghan President Ashraf Ghani’s plane landing on their soil. The Tajik airforce has confirmed that his aircraft did not enter its airspace.

Meanwhile, according to earlier reports, the former President’s current whereabouts are unknown. Media reports state that Ashraf Ghani is trying to seek asylum in another country, possibly a western country, maybe the US. He fled Afghanistan after Kabul came under Taliban control.
