Lahore, 17th August: Russian ambassador Dmitry Zhirnov says that the situation in Kabul is peaceful and everything has calmed down in the city. The situation in Kabul now under the Taliban is better than it was under Ashraf Ghani.

According to details, the Russian ambassador to Afghanistan on Monday praised the Taliban’s conduct and said the group, which is still officially named as a terrorist organization in Russia, had made Kabul safer in the first 24 hours than it had been under the previous authorities.

According to reports from Reuters, Zhirnov spoke to Moscow’s Ekho Moskvy radio station and informed that he had been impressed by the Taliban’s conduct so far, describing their approach as “good, positive and business-like.”

He added, “The situation is peaceful and good and everything has calmed down in the city. The situation in Kabul now under the Taliban is better than it was under (President) Ashraf Ghani.”

As per reports from international media, the Russian ambassador said that yesterday (Monday) the regime fell like a house of cards, There was a feeling of chaos, a power vacuum and looters came on the streets.

He also reported that initially unarmed Taliban fighters entered the capital Kabul, and asked the government and the US forces to surrender their weapons. Later when President Ashraf Ghani fled the country, the armed Taliban entered Kabul and imposed a curfew.

Zhirnov said the Taliban had taken control of the Russian embassy at Kabul which had a staff of over 100 people. However, they had promised to protect Russian diplomats, in line with earlier agreements.

The views expressed by Ambassador Dmitry Zhirnov reflect the effort by Russia to deepen its well-established ties with the Taliban.

Meanwhile, Russia wants to ensure that the crisis in Afghanistan does not extend over into Central Asia, the part it regards as the backyard of the former Soviet Union. Hence, Russia does not want it to become a launchpad for other extreme Islamist groups.

Like many other countries, Russia is surprised how the Taliban seized control of the country at a lightning speed even as the US forces were still trying to vacate the American citizens from Afghanistan.

It is to be noted that Ashraf Ghani fled on Sunday to an unknown location, saying he wanted to prevent bloodshed. Russia also reported that Ghani had fled with four cars and a helicopter full of cash.
