LONDON: Simon Case, the most senior civil servant in the UK, has described the British government to be a “terrible, tragic joke” in its handling of the Covid-19 pandemic in the ongoing inquiry pertaining to the disregard of SOPs at 10 Downing Street.

According to The Guardian, “expletive-laden WhatsApp messages” shared between staff at 10 Downing Street given to the Covid inquiry highlight the decision-making and role of the then-PM Boris Johnson’s wife, Carrie Johnson. It is believed that the messages would prompt further questions over the “professionalism” of Simon Case, who also lamented that Carrie Johnson was “the real person in charge” at the Prime Minister’s residence.

It is pertinent to note that Case, is already under scrutiny for his “unprofessional” message exchange with Matt Hancock in which he used the term “hilarious” in connection with travelers being confined to hotels due to Covid restrictions. A WhatsApp conversation since leaked via The Telegraph dubbed the ‘Lockdown Files’ shows Case found humor that travelers were being barred to the hotels upon arrival in the UK.

Case, who served as a permanent secretary at 10 Downing Street and was appointed the head of the civil service in 2020, allegedly expressed frustration that the government handled the pandemic poorly. In messages, read to the inquiry on Friday, Chase said: “The government doesn’t have the credibility needed to be imposing stuff within only days of deciding not too [sic]”. He added, “We look like a terrible, tragic joke. If we were going hard, that decision was needed weeks ago. I cannot cope with this I cannot cope with this.”

Lee Cain, serving as Boris Johnson’s Director of Communications at the time, also expressed disappointment in Carrie Johnson, saying that she “doesn’t know” what she is talking about. The messages believed to be dated 14 October 2020, were presented before the inquiry session focused on the decision-making and political governance of the administration.

On the other hand, a letter from political strategist Dominic Cummings, who served as chief adviser to Johnson until November 2020, contained an email from 13 July 2020 concerning the “problems of the No 10/CabOff (Cabinet Office) set up that is relevant to the inquiry”. According to Cummings, it was copied to the PM “but he never engaged seriously”.
