Can militants turn to Kashmir once war in Afghanistan ends?

The Afghan Taliban are developing a war strategy as well as a diplomatic strategy to strengthen their political position in Afghanistan. However, in this situation, there have been reports in the media that Indian delegations have also met with the political leadership of the Taliban in Doha, the capital of Qatar.

According to the details, Afghan Taliban have expressed ignorance of the news. According to media reports, a high-level Indian delegation met with the Taliban’s political leadership in Doha this month.

According to senior journalist and Afghan affairs expert Sami Yousafzai, some members of the Quetta Shura are confirming reports that Mullah Baradar, Khairullah Khairkhwa and Sheikh Dilawar were present at the meeting with the Indian foreign minister. He added that in this meeting, the Taliban had assured the Indian delegation that in the future, the Taliban’s relations would not be subject to Islamabad’s wishes.

Muhammad Sohail Shaheen, a spokesman for the Taliban’s political office in Doha, Qatar, said that he was unaware of the meetings. Another senior leader of the Taliban’s Doha office also expressed ignorance of the meeting with the Indian delegation.

Both the Afghan Taliban and the Indian government have not confirmed the meetings. However, observers say India has been very active in Afghanistan for the past two decades. New Delhi wants better relations with Afghanistan if the Taliban come to power in Kabul in the future.

Sami Yousafzai said India-Afghanistan relations have a long history. Under the Taliban, the Indian embassy in Kabul was completely closed and that was the most difficult time for New Delhi. According to him, it is no longer possible for India to deny the reality of the Taliban and India wants to know how the Taliban leadership views New Delhi.

Sami Yousafzai added that New Delhi also realizes that the United States (US) has been fighting the Taliban directly for two decades. Now if the US can negotiate with the Taliban, why can’t India talk to them as they have never been involved in such a confrontation against them.

According to him, the Taliban also have an idea if they ever succeed in ruling Kabul again. So India or other countries refrain from funding and supporting their rival groups like the Northern Alliance. Earlier, Qatar’s special envoy Mutlaq bin Majid al-Qahtani said during a web conference that the Indian delegation had quietly visited Qatar to meet with the Taliban’s political leadership in Doha.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi says Indian Foreign Minister has visited Doha twice. However, he did not necessarily meet with the Taliban leadership. On one hand, Shah Mehmood Qureshi did not confirm the meeting, however, on the other hand, Moeed Yousaf, Pakistan’s national security adviser, in a recent interview criticized the Afghan Taliban for meeting with the Indian delegation.

Along with the US government, various political factions in Afghanistan also encouraged India to negotiate with the Taliban. The Taliban have recently seized several districts in Afghanistan. Earlier, the southern and eastern areas were considered Taliban strongholds. Now, however, the Taliban have advanced into northern Afghanistan.

Last week, the Taliban took control of the border with Tajikistan, as well as Doshi, a key district which connects Kabul to northern Afghanistan. The Taliban claim to have taken control of more than 100 districts since May 1, 2021. However, most of the districts have been acquired by Afghan forces without a fight.
